  7. Natural science begins with
  8. and depends upon perception,
  9. but perception itself has not
  10. aroused the universal curiosity
  11. that other subjects of science
  12. have. Scientific exploration
  13. began with things most distant
  14. from us--the stars--and only
  15. much later moved inward,
  16. toward man himself. It required
  17. a sophisticated self-
  18. consciousness to appreciate
  19. that perception itself
  20. constitutes one of the greatest
  21. and most difficult scientific
  22. problems of all.

  24.     Even today few people
  25. recognize that the way the
  26. world looks to us is a
  27. remarkable achievement that
  28. calls for explanation. Whereas
  29. many individuals have some
  30. understanding of the
  31. phenomena and concepts of the
  32. natural sciences, with respect
  33. to the field of perception few
  34. have gone beyond the
  35. knowledge that the eye
  36. functions like a camera and
  37. yields a "picture" on the 
  38. retina. Our perception of a
  39. world of objects and events,
  40. however, cannot be explained
  41. adequately by simply referring
  42. to processes within the eye or
  43. to the transmission of
  44. information into the brain
  45. about the retinal image. The
  46. usefulness of the analogy of the
  47. eye to a camera ends with the
  48. formation of that image; the
  49. problem of perception then
  50. begins.
